Is anyone out there training and teaching church members how to evangelize in a post-modern, post-Christian world? What is working for you? What struggles are you having? I'm really interested in connecting with people on this topic.
Anna Rapa
Hi Anna,
I recommend listening to Jud Wilhite (Main Session - Friday, 4:30pm)--know that a lot of their "strategies" are specific for their mostly transient population in Las Vegas, but the message of grace, the idea of focusing on one practical "go do it" for the week, and their commitment to showing love to the community (vs. just being a building), are applicable to any ministry.
I guess I fit in this same arena. It is easy for us to do 'benevolence' style outreach into the more needy communities but what do you do to reach out to those in the more affluent but just as spiritually needy communities?
Tery Albright
Tery - I just ran across Charles Hill--another speaker for next week. He listed a resource by Missio: Tangible Kingdom Primer. It looks fantastic and definitely worth checking out...
Hi - come by the Alpha Course Booth and let's talk. If you would like to see more before the convention go to AlphaUSA.org. Myself or Jim Charlton would love to talk to you about how the Alpha Course connects people to God by connecting them to one another. I am in San Diego and can be reached at inamasten@alphausa.org too if you would like to meet or speak sooner than next week.
Ina Masten
Ina beat me to it! I was going to write about The Alpha Course too. It is an amazing outreach tool and we've experienced a great movement of renewal within our church among believers as well. Definately make time to stop by the Alpha booth!
Jay, I just pulled up Tangible on the Missio web site. Looks very good. Will there be any copies available at the NOC?
Hi Tery, I don't think they have a presence at NOC but just sent Charles a message to see if he knows for sure...I'm actually there as a sponsor of the event (TheCommon.org) and don't have any affliiation with Missio (though I do love what they're doing). I'll let you know what I find out, and feel free to find me next week!
I'd definitely recommend attending Dan Kimball's breakout sessions in addition to his Discussion Group on reaching emerging generations. Dan is an excellent voice and practitioner on this topic, plus you'll meet other church leaders with the same focus and struggles.
Jay and Tery, Hugh Halter and Matt Smay--the authors of Tangible Kingdom and founders of Missio--won't be at NOC, but I can connect you with Hugh and send you an article he wrote for Outreach magazine. E-mail me: llowry@outreach.com
Check out Mission U: School of Witnessing! They have five courses and one TOTALLY hits this topic head on, it's called: 'Christ Alone' in a Coexist World. You can check it out at www.whatsmissionu.com and click on "Courses" in the left nav bar.
